New Zealand open coaching job to foreigners

12 Fevereiro 2018 04:42

New Zealand will open their coaching role to overseas candidates in a move likely to end David Kidwell's reign.

Kidwell came under fire after the Kiwis suffered a shock loss to Fiji in the Rugby League World Cup quarter-finals last year.

While Kidwell is set to need to reapply for the job, confirmation of Monday's change is likely to make his chances of retaining the position slim.

New Zealand Rugby League (NRZL) chairman Reon Edwards insisted the move made no difference to Kidwell's chances.

"The Kiwis coach eligibility rule has been reviewed and the board has agreed to implement a recommendation from the review panel and immediately change this rule to allow for international as well as New Zealand candidates to apply," he said.

"While this change is designed to ensure the best possible person is appointed to the job, it should not be read in any way as a comment on the World Cup coach's past performance, nor on his possible re-appointment in the role due to his appointment having concluded at the end of the 2017 World Cup."
